Best Teams to Win the 2024 NFL Season
The 2024 NFL season is just around the corner, and with it comes the excitement of a new year and the chance to crown a new Super Bowl champion. While it’s still too early to say for sure who will hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February, there are a few teams that stand out as the early favorites.
Detroit Lions – 10.5 wins
No longer condemned to the basement of the NFC North, the Lions have gained respect after their run to the NFC Championship game last season. They could get there again this season, as they’ve been filling the holes in their secondary in the offseason. They drafted cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr while acquiring Carlton Davis III in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Their offense is as solid as last year, including play-caller Ben Johnson, who turned down head-coaching positions to stay in Detroit for a third year. Obviously, he sees great potential here.
Quarterback Jared Goff’s performance earned him a contract extension, making him the second-highest-paid quarterback by annual contract value. He led an offense pivotal to Detroit’s surge in the standings over the last two years. This year’s focus on the defense could mean an even better showing.
New York Jets – 9.5 wins
One of the biggest questions in the league is whether Aaron Rodgers, who turns 41 in December, will be able to stay healthy and still be good. At this age in the NFL, any year can go downhill quickly. To offset that issue, the Jets made a clever play in bringing in quarterback Tyrod Taylor to back him up. At 34, Taylor has much more experience than Zach Wilson and could keep the Jets humming if Rodgers goes down again.
The offense was almost last in pass-blocking and run-blocking last season. They reinforced the offensive line by adding Tyron Smith (Dallas), Morgan Moses (Baltimore), offensive guard John Simpson (Baltimore), and rookie offensive tackle Olu Fashanu, who they picked in the first round, 11th overall.
Fortunately, the Jets have one of the best defenses in the NFL, which can help them go far if their offense improves to just average. Their division should feel easier this year because Buffalo and Miami both lost crucial players, and New England isn’t very good. If the Jets can stay healthy, they might even reach double-digit wins.
Houston Texans – 9.5 wins
The Texans were a pleasant surprise last year, unexpectedly becoming the AFC South Champions. In the offseason, GM Nick Caserio added some veteran talent to keep the momentum going. Wideout Stefan Diggs was traded from Buffalo, and defensive end Danielle Hunter (Minnesota) was acquired as a free agent.
If there’s chemistry between Diggs and 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud, Houston could be looking at a second AFC South title. Their schedule is a little tougher than last season, especially Weeks 15-17, which comes right after their bye and includes a Christmas Day game against the Ravens.
Chicago Bears – 8.5 wins
It’s hard not to get excited about getting the first draft pick overall who turns out to be a high-end quarterback prospect. The Bears used their first overall draft pick to select quarterback Caleb Williams from USC. We won’t know how good he’ll be until his first few games. But to improve his odds, the Bears picked up wide receiver Rome Odunze as the No. 9 pick. They acquired tight end Gerald Everett, running back D’Andre Swift, and centers Coleman Shelton and Ryan Bates in free agency. They also traded the Los Angeles Chargers for wide receiver Keenan Allen.
They already had wideout DJ Moore and tight end Cole Kmet, who had career highs last year in several receiving categories, even though it was with the struggling quarterbacks Tyson Bagent and Justin Fields. We could see their stats improve to new highs.
Chicago worked hard last season to develop a top-10 defense. This year’s focus seems to be on offense, specifically, a quarterback and receivers. If coach Matt Eberflus can get the rookies and new veterans working as a team, they can improve on last year’s 7-10 record, but it will be a battle in what most consider the toughest division in the NFL – NFC North.
